Extensions at Kalyx prisons

Two Kalyx prisons are undergoing extension building work to provide additional prisoner place capacity.

The extension at HMP Forest Bank will provide additional 264 adult male places whilst the extension at HMP Bronzefield will offer 77 additional female places.

At HMP Forest Bank, prisoner accommodation will consist of a new four-storey house block in two wings. The hub area of the house block will deliver additional prisoner and operational support facilities including classrooms, group rooms and staff facilities to supplement the main activity functions throughout the rest of the prison. The activity rooms on the house block and hub areas have been designed to be multi-functional, so that they may be used flexibly for educational and other Pathway – based interventions.

Also included are prisoner exercise yards to the house block, a new covered secure pedestrian link corridor between the existing prisoner facilities and the new house block and new sports pitches. The work will also necessitate the revamping of the fencing, extension of the perimeter access road, new paved areas and soft landscaping.

In addition to the house block, the existing two storey entry building will be extended and altered to provide new staff training facilities, Hearing Centre, additional video court facilities and extended administration and offices.

To provide extra facilities within the central kitchen, there will be significant redesign of the kitchen area and additional equipment installed.

The contractual opening date for the delivery of the additional capacity at HMP Forest Bank is 30 November 2009.

The extension at HMP Bronzefield includes the construction of a new house block and the relocation of an existing sports pitch.

The new two-storey, three winged house block will accommodate 58 single cells and 9 double cells and 1 disabled person’s cell. To comply with the key principles in designing women’s prisons, en-suite showers have been incorporated in all the cells. In addition to the house block there will be two further exercise yards and an additional secure courtyard area.

The central hub will include activity rooms, staff facilities including offices, a staff night base, kitchen and interview rooms, voluntary testing area, a dispensary and laundry. The activity rooms include multi-functional rooms, group rooms and classrooms. They can be used for a variety of functions and activities such as education, group therapy, discussion groups and training.

Both extension projects are on target to meet their contractual opening dates of 30th November at HMP Forest Bank and 11th December at HMP Bronzefield.
