Award for HMP Peterborough

HMP Peterborough has won a prestigious international award from one of the world’s leading health and safety training, advisory and audit bodies.

Following rigorous assessment by an independent adjudication panel the British Safety Council (BSC) has bestowed its esteemed International Safety Award on HMP Peterborough.

For an organisation to win this coveted award it must demonstrate that it has in place comprehensive health and safety polices; targeted plans and a clear commitment to health and safety from the shop floor to the boardroom. It must be committed to the promotion of a positive safety culture. The winning organisation must also have demonstrated the competence of those responsible for the management of health and safety and provide clear evidence about the improvements they have achieved in health and safety during the year.

HMP Peterborough’s success was celebrated at an awards evening held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel where Brian Nimick, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council congratulated all winners on their contribution to the wellbeing and safety of their workforce and said:

“For more than 50 years, BSC has led the way in promoting health, safety and environmental best practice in society. In the 21st century, many organisations worldwide are understandably making health, safety and environmental management their top priority. Through achieving an International Safety Award, Kalyx HMP Peterborough is helping to make our vision of a healthy and safe working environment a reality.”

Director Mike Conway commented:

“I am very proud of the team’s achievement and in particular would like to thank everyone for their contribution towards this, especially our Fire, Health and Safety Officer April Harvey.  Our health and safety arrangements have come on in leaps and bounds over the last twelve months, driven by the fact that everyone has accepted their personal responsibility for compliance and improvements.  It is great to see this externally recognised and rewarded.  Well done to all the team!”

Ivor Woods, Operational Director responsible for Health and Safety at Kalyx also expressed his gratitude to the Peterborough Team for obtaining such a high standard and setting a good example of what was possible in such a demanding operational environment. He also commented that this award is a tangible recognition that the Peterborough Management Team views the safety of staff, prisoners and visitors as the highest priority.

Alastair Davey, Global Health & Safety Director for Sodexo said:

"Making every day a better day starts with making every day a safe day. This prestigious international award, from one of the worlds leading health and safety organisations, is a special achievement for Kalyx and Sodexo. Congratulations to the Peterborough team and everyone at Kalyx."
