Working For Kalyx
Prisoner Custody Officer
The public's perception of a Prisoner Custody Officer is that of
a jailer, just turning keys, but this is just the tip of the
iceberg. You are responsible for the day-to-day welfare, safety,
security and resettlement of prisoners in your care. They rely on
you for virtually all their needs, from toiletries to dealing with
sensitive personal problems.
Prisoners have had their right to freedom removed by the courts.
That is their punishment by law. It is not our job to inflict
additional punishment: it is our job and our responsibility to
treat all prisoners as individuals, with decency and respect, in a
way which helps them to lead constructive lives upon release. While
in a Kalyx-managed prison they are in
the company's care - and the emphasis is on care.
Our prime responsibility is the maintenance of first class security and an orderly community. That comes from the successful integration of all prison operations and programmes. Prisons with ample activities, prisoner participation and good communication between staff and prisoners rarely have serious security problems. Kalyx operates in this manner. It is sometimes difficult. You will deal with inmates from all walks of life, nationalities and cultural backgrounds – how do you communicate with an inmate who doesn't speak your language?
Most inmates do not want to be in prison; some have behavioural problems, and there will be situations that need good interpersonal and communication skills to resolve, whilst maintaining security and control.
Kalyx focuses on the prisoner's future, because almost all will at some time be released. We work with each prisoner to establish what will most help him or her to live a full life outside without recourse to crime. We provide counselling, education, training, work experience, as well as leisure and recreational activities. We encourage responsible conduct in group settings. In short, we concentrate on developing prisoners' latent qualities to be able to cope and live normal lives with family and friends.
An extensive nine-week training programme will prepare you for this highly challenging and rewarding role, but your training does not stop there. You will receive on-going training throughout your career, allowing you to progress through promotions and continual personal development.
